Hygiene promotion using PHAST approach (TOT)

Introduction

The achievement of Sustainable development goal of “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” needs changing collective and individual behavior with sustainable use of water and sanitation facilities. This training will enable community trainers and organizational staff to enhance their knowledge and training skills to better manage WASH projects using participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation (PHAST) approach.

Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) is a systematic participatory approach consisting of seven sequential steps that culminate in the development of an action plan for addressing the prevailing WASH problems in a given community.

Course Contents

  1. Introductions and experience sharing
  2. Concepts of community participation, ownership and sustainability.
  3. Concepts of hygiene and sanitation in relation to health.
  4. The process of hygiene and sanitation behaviour change and the key factors that influence it.
  5. Health awareness and behavioral change (models)
  6. Introduction to PHAST (the steps, tools, activities, etc)
  7. Community empowerment, PHAST as a planning tool
  8. Implementation of PHAST

Purpose of the training

This training aims to strengthen the knowledge of staff to understand critical WASH concepts and reinforce participants’ facilitation skills and competency in participatory community-based training on PHAST.

And then implementation of complete PAHST package, objective, methodology, tools, material, and outcome of each activity of PAHST in the current and future project.

  • To teach participants how to involve the communities in their project planning and implementation through participatory techniques.
  • To teach staff how communities gain confidence and responsibility for their own projects and have a clear say in what they want and do not want.
  • Staff to learn how to effectively involve the community in monitoring and evaluation ensures that the services put in place respond to the needs of the community and that essential direct feedback provided can serve to change activities as necessary.
  • Train participants on participatory techniques, with proper guidance and management, can become a lasting asset to the program and the community.
  • Staff will be able to implement the hygiene promotion activities through Participatory approaches and get positive change in the community.
  • To make participants understand about adult learning cycle (ToT) and How adults learn.
  • To make participants understand adults an analysis of the target behavior – Who needs to do what, when, and how?

  • Help participants in the selection of culturally sensitive IEC material for HP activities implementation.

Expected outcome of training:

At the end of this training participants will be able to:

  • Understanding and strengthening participants’ skills on concepts of community participation, ownership, and sustainability, hygiene, and sanitation in relation to health.
  • Understanding the process of hygiene and sanitation behavior change and the key factors that influence it and analysis of the target behavior – Who needs to do what, when, and how?
  • To Strengthen knowledge of participants on PHAST (the steps, tools, activities, etc.) Community empowerment, PHAST as a planning tool, and Implementation of complete PHAST package PHAST.
  • Understanding adult learning cycle (ToT): How adults really learn and selection of culturally sensitive IEC material for HP activities implementation

Methodology

The proposed four steps’ approach for the training methodology is briefly mentioned in figure below;

  1. Assessment of the Participants

In this assessment, the trainer will get to know about the existing level knowledge of participants about Hygiene promotion and the PHAST approach. This assessment will be done prior to training through meetings and structured questionnaires.

Training Delivery

The training will be highly innovative and focused on a friendly environment and will be delivered using interactive methodologies to ensure that participants are engaged in learning and understand each step of the training activity. Practical sessions for all PHAST steps, tools, and activities will be organized for participants to ensure that participants understand the concept and are able to deliver training for other participants.

The participants will be encouraged to participate in practical activities and raise questions, which will be properly answered with examples and evidence from various contexts. The training will be evaluated at every day’s end to know the shortcomings/lacking and will be improved for next day. And Half-day field visit will be conducted to pre-test some tools.  

Training deliverable:

The consultant will provide a debriefing before the end of training. The output of the mission will be

  • PHAST learning handout
  • Course completion certificate for participants attending training.
  • Selection of appropriate material for PHAST tools and activities (for field implementation)
