Introduction to the Course

This is an updated version of the courses delivered by CRSM since 2016. The revised content considers the significant uptick in the number of displaced people caused by the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, delves into the challenges posed by hardening social and political attitudes towards migrants globally, and examines the increasing role of climate-related challenges in global migration trends. The course also explores the role of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and the associated comprehensive solutions and community-based pathways that have emerged since.

Facilitator’s Profile – Phil Thorpe

Phil Thorpe is an international protection and migration specialist with over 20 years of experience working on the frontlines of forced displacement across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Having served with UNHCR, IOM, Red Cross, and several leading humanitarian agencies, Phil has a deep and practical understanding of refugee law, protection programming, and displacement’s complex realities in conflict and post-conflict settings.

Phil has been directly involved in refugee status determination (RSD), asylum case management, and designing durable solutions for vulnerable populations in contexts such as Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Sudan. He has worked with governments, international organizations, and civil society partners to strengthen national asylum systems, build protection referral mechanisms, and promote community-based approaches aligned with international legal standards.

As a trainer and facilitator, Phil is known for translating legal frameworks into real-world action. His courses are rich with case studies, field-tested tools, and role-play exercises, allowing participants to navigate protection scenarios confidently.
